Samsung's first portable projector—The Freestyle—was unveiled earlier this month at CES 2022. The interesting device went on pre-order in the US on January 4, and it looks like it has been a decent success. The South Korean firm announced that The Freestyle received over 10,000 pre-orders within the first month.
The Freestyle is currently available in Latin America, North America, and South Korea, and it has a price tag of $899. It can project up to a 100-inch image on any flat surface. The device is small (just 830g) and has a cylindrical shape. Its light source can be placed at any angle, thanks to its 180-degree rotatable head.
It has Full HD resolution and supports HDR10, HDR10+, and HLG standards. Thanks to autofocus and built-in self-calibration, the Freestyle can do automatic keystone corrections for perfect image quality. It can adjust colors, contrast, and brightness depending on the surface and ambient lighting.
Samsung's new portable projector runs Tizen OS and has built-in support for various audio and video streaming services like Apple TV+, Disney+, Netflix, Prime Video, and Samsung TV+. It can mirror a smartphone screen, too, thanks to AirPlay 2 and Miracast. It has built-in digital voice assistants (Alexa and Bixby) and a SmartThings control hub.
The Freestyle features Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5.2 (with dual-audio support), and a 5W loudspeaker. It can be powered by either an AC adapter or a 60W USB-PD power supply (or power bank). The device has support for various accessories and stands.
Executive Vice President Simon Sung from Samsung's Visual Display Business, said, “The Freestyle offers new levels of functionality, and reflects how users are spending their time by allowing them to enjoy high-quality viewing wherever they are, regardless of spatial limitations. We plan to continue introducing innovative lifestyle displays like The Freestyle to meet the demands of users who want stellar viewing experiences that are also flexible and convenient.”
