Samsung starts the clock on Galaxy S24’s seven years of updates

Earlier today, Samsung revealed information about the latest security patch that the company will release for supported devices over the coming weeks. It has also updated the list that details which Galaxy devices are eligible for monthly, quarterly, or biannual security updates and added the Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and Galaxy S24 Ultra to the monthly schedule.

This is normal for any new flagship Galaxy phone (flagship tablets, on the other hand, get quarterly updates from day one). Still, the Galaxy S24 series is special because the S24, S4+, and S24 Ultra will remain on this list far longer than any of the other phones as they are eligible for seven years of updates.

Galaxy S24 owners will get not just security updates for seven years, but also Android and One UI updates that add new features and change more than just the device's security level. Galaxy phones launched before the S24 are ineligible for seven years of updates, though every flagship launched in the future, including the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6, should be.

It will be interesting to see how long the Galaxy S24 lineup will receive monthly updates. The Galaxy S20 and Galaxy Note 20, which are promised a minimum of four years of security updates, continue to receive them monthly even in the fourth year, and we can expect the same to be true for at least the first five years for the Galaxy S24, S24+, and S24 Ultra.

But will anyone even care by the time we reach the sixth or seventh year of the Galaxy S24's support period? Most customers probably won't hang on to their Galaxy S24 series phone that long, and the ones that do will likely be glad about the fact that their device continues to get any updates at all, monthly or otherwise.
