MediaTek trying to steal Samsung from Qualcomm with juicy discounts

Being the world's largest Android smartphone manufacturer means that Samsung ships an insane number of phones every year. If you could get one of your products into its devices that would certainly be a big win for your business.

So it's hardly surprising to hear that MediaTek is offering Samsung a special discount on its chipsets. Samsung sources chipsets from within the conglomerate as well as third parties like Qualcomm and MediaTek for the various devices in its lineup.

MediaTek reportedly offering exclusive pricing to Samsung

A tipster on X claims that MediaTek is offering special pricing exclusively for Samsung as it wants the company to use more of its chips in Galaxy devices. If the claim is true and Samsung takes up the offer, we may start to see more MediaTek chipsets but only in non-flagship devices.

Samsung has exclusivity with Qualcomm and in return, the San Diego-based company provides slightly overclocked versions of its flagship chipsets for Samsung's flagship devices. That's why the new Galaxy S24 series is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy and not just the regular Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 that everyone else is getting.

Samsung also prefers using its own Exynos chipsets in high-end devices, which is why it has equipped the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+ with the new Exynos 2400 in most markets. While MediaTek does make high-end chipsets and it will be hoping to take on Qualcomm with the Dimensity 9400 this year, it's unlikely that Samsung would make the switch to Dimensity chipsets for its flagship phones regardless of the special pricing on offer.

Perhaps we may see some of the Qualcomm chips on mid-range Galaxy phones being swapped with their MediaTek equivalents, but that's likely going to be the extent of any closer collaboration between MediaTek and Samsung for now.
