First things first, the Korean media says that Samsung will use the M12 material set for the OLED panels soon-to-be-employed by the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5. Furthermore, Samsung Display plans to expand its M12 material set application to more iPhone models.
While only two of the four iPhone 14 models released last year use M12 OLED materials, the recent report (via The Elec) says all four upcoming iPhone 15 variants will boast M12-based OLED panels.
In addition to applying M12-based OLED panels to more devices, Samsung Display is also developing two new OLED material sets, says the same report. Firstly, Samsung is working on M13 OLED displays, which may be used by Google for its first foldable phone, set to hit the market later this year.
If true, it means that Google's first foldable phone could use a new M13 material set, while the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5 would employ M12 OLEDs. Admittedly, this sounds a bit odd, given that Google phones rarely boast the latest and greatest hardware advancements.
Secondly, Samsung Display is way ahead of the curve with its plans for OLED material set development, and supposedly, the tech giant is also working on the M14 OLED material set. The latter, the report says, will be used for the iPhone 16 series scheduled for release in late 2024.
Samsung is expected to announce the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5 in August-September 2023. The Z Fold 5 should have a new hinge design. Meanwhile, Google's first foldable phone, the so-called Pixel Fold, was initially rumored to go on sale in May 2023, but newer reports hint at a Q3 release later this year. And finally, Apple should announce its next iPhone in late Q3 or early Q4.
