As revealed at CES 2023, Samsung is committed to improving its device ecosystem and connectivity between different devices through the SmartThings platform. As part of its new strategy, Samsung is now rolling out a massive update for SmartThings on the Galaxy Watch series of smartwatches. The update brings more convenient control to connected devices from the user's wrist.
The latest update for SmartThings (version 1.1.08) on the Galaxy Watch brings several key improvements and new features. For one, Galaxy Watch users can now swipe right from the watch face to access SmartThings.
And now, for the first time, Galaxy Watch users gain control over more Samsung and third-party devices, including SmartTag, air purifiers, thermostats, and window blinds. These device categories were only controllable via SmartThings on smartphones, but Samsung is now adding support for Galaxy smartwatches.
Livestream doorbell cameras to your wrist, control more devices
Thanks to this new SmartThings update, Galaxy Watch users can now livestream home and doorbell cameras from Next and Ring cameras (with WebRTC support) directly to their wrists. They can also use the Galaxy Watch to talk to guests remotely.
In addition, Galaxy Watch users can now start/stop the ring and control the ring volume for SmartTag. They can also adjust the fan speed of air purifiers and set the temperature of thermostats. And they can open, close, pause, and adjust levels for window blinds — all from their Galaxy Watches.
Last but not least, Galaxy Watch users can now remotely control connected smart TVs through the newly added “Device-to-Device” (D2D) control feature. This works with Samsung smart TVs that support BT HID and requires the devices to be within the Bluetooth range.
The latest SmartThings update is available for Galaxy Watches running Wear OS, i.e., the Galaxy Watch 4, the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic, the Galaxy Watch 5, and the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro.
