South Korean court fines Samsung heir Lee Jae-yong for illegal drug use

Samsung leader Lee Jae-yong has been facing legal woes over the past few years for various reasons. After getting released from prison a few weeks ago, he has been fined by a South Korean court for the illegal use of drugs.

The Seoul district court convicted Lee for the illegal use of the sedative propofol and charged him with a fine of KRW 70 million (around $60,055). The court also ordered a penalty fee of KRW 17 million (around $14,566) as he was convicted of the Narcotics Control Act violations. It was found that Samsung's leader used propofol illegally 41 times at a cosmetic clinic in Seoul between January 2015 to May 2020.

In June 2021, prosecutors indicted Lee on the charges of taking propofol for purposes other than medical treatment. Propofol is said to have the same high levels of addiction and dependency as other illegal drugs and is highly prohibited. The court noted that the dosage taken by Lee was quite high, and a person of his social stature should be “compliant with the law and serve as an exemplary person.

The South Korean court also ordered Lee “to break free of propofol and become a healthy and exemplary parent to children.” Lee, South Korea's richest person, has spent some time in jail as he was sentenced to prison for 2.5 years for bribing an associate of former South Korean President Park Geun-hye. The current South Korean president recently pardoned him.
