We exclusively reported earlier today that Samsung is going to remove the standard 3.5mm headphone jack from the Galaxy S8. It’s likely that the space saved by removing the headphone jack could be utilized for a slightly bigger battery and perhaps even stereo speakers. So the question we need you to answer is whether you’d prefer to keep the headphone jack instead of better speakers and a bigger battery? Vote down below and do share your thoughts about this with us in the comments section below.

Poll results: An overwhelming majority of voters predictably said that it wouldn’t buy the Galaxy S8 if it doesn’t have a headphone jack, 41 percent to be precise. Only 32 percent of them would rather have a bigger battery and stereo speakers while 27 percent are willing to buy the Galaxy S8 as long as Samsung gives them a pair of free wireless headphones.

mimimi – Why u all hate about this headphone jack that much?! Im using wireless headphones from SMS Audio since over 2 years, and my car has also bluetooth built in. its just so much easier without all this wires. Bluetooth 4.0 use much less battery so u dont have to worry about that and in 2k17 it gets to 5.0 with even 4 times bigger range!
cmon technology goes on and on, i would love to see the S8 thinner with stereo speakers and bigger battery life!!

You guys don realize that loosing the headphone jack also means loosing the FM Radio functionality of the Samsung phones? (Because the headphone cable works also as antenna). If you are happy paying for a data plan to listen free radio, go ahead!!! If they really want more space inside the phone, way don’t replace the 3.5mm jack for a 2.5mm jack and we will be happy getting a $5 dollar adapter. no big deal. I promise that if the S8 does not comes with a headphone jack, the S7 will be my last Samsung phone and I will move… Read more »

Maybe that is why they already dropped FM radio from their flagship phones a while ago, soften us up for the loss of the jack.

MrZauberer

All Samsung phones have radio functionality but the mobile network operators disable it on purpose so you have to pay for a data plan in order to listen radio stations. If you install a custom firmware to the phone, the FM radio will be there working perfectly.

So … in your mind, when all the phones leave their jack (cause wirelees is the future), you will stop using mobile phones? Come on…

I would be happy if they included a adapter that gives you the best sound quality like if you were plugging in to a 3.5 jack,or look at different brands with a standard 3.5 jack.

Why can’t they jus simply put the headfone jack on the top like they did on the previous S?

eHoolie

Quit making these damn phones thinner and thinner. They’re too flimsy as is. Then put all the above in. If the Note8 does not have a jack, then I’m out.

Not sure what the BIG deal is. Why not just go for a 2.5mm jack? They do exist you know. If they want to go smaller, the 2.5mm jack is the best of both world.

No one in their right mind would wast time and money on wireless buds. Not only do you look like a clown wearing one, but they’re tacky, hard to keep track of where they are, and no one wants to charge them.

2.5mm headphone jack is the way to go.

Why should I have to choose? Make the phone a bit thicker, keep the headphone jack, add stereo and bigger battery capacity. Let me get it thru your head; I have paid almost 400 euro (yes ,four hundred) for high fidelity headphones in order to listen to music over my Note 3, I am not about to give it away nor am I interested to any stupid gadget (ie. adapter) in order to use them. I do hope that Samsung is not going to do what Apple did, just because they feel compelled to do so, and they better understand… Read more »

Samsung cannot update half of their devices on time to latest os and then wants to remove.

The Galaxy S4 is a perfectly capable phone that can still run 6.0.1

Is there no technology out there where batteries can be small but have more power.

utvic99
utvic99

It’s called a solid-state battery, and it’s too expensive to be massively produced. That’s why we still have those crap flammable Li-ion batteries

vbx
vbx

Bluetooth ear buds / head sets use up more power than the headphone jack. Therefore making the bigger battery not so much better.

The wireless headset would be expensive.

For me, it doesn’t matter… I’m already using BT headset.
But for alot of people, removing the headphone jack is a major loss. And it will probably cost Samsung some customers.

warlockba

BT per standard is lossy. So if you want HiFi Audio (not that any Snapdragon device could deliver, as Qualcomm audio chips are quite bad) – BT is a no-go. The Exynos phones could deliver amazing audio – worthy for a HiFi Headset, but the profit margin on those are minimal, compared to just packaging Snapdragon with everything integrated; so Samsung decided even against that for most of the markets.

Vibgyoar

False dichotomy. You missed the other option: better speakers, bigger battery, keep headphone jack (and forget thinner).

I don’t understand the furor? Samsung Galaxy has wireless charging, so why do you need two ports? Just one port suffices and if it can take a headphone jack and/or a charging cable, brilliant!

Because simply there are those that have paid for great headphones that are not wireless; Why should they get the finger ?

MySchizoBuddy

They don’t have to buy S8. There are hundreds of other models they can buy

Of course they do not. However the topic at hand is if people would like the removal of headphone jack.

mtbrown262626
mtbrown262626

I personally don’t mind but I can understand some people not liking the idea as they paid good money for some headphones and don’t like the idea of having an adaptor plugged into the bottom of their phone when they’re out and about in order to use their existing headphones as having something plugged into the bottom of your phone when you’re out and about which most people have their phone in their pocket is likely to bend and damage the USB C port however me personally I don’t mind as I would prefer stereo speakers as I already have… Read more »

Would you recommend the Gear IconX? The Android Central review was rather lukewarm

Some people misunderstand the question. Even if they put bigger battery, if you remove something else then you can put even bigger battery. This is a law of physics. So let me rephrase the question, would you prefer even bigger battery, which you would get in place of the 3.5 mm jack?

I haven’t used Wired Headphones ina very long time. I also don’t give a crap if Samsung copies an idea from some one else if it is going to make the phone better in some way. Frankly, I think Samsung builds phones better than anyone including Apple – despite supposedly copying some ideas from Apple in the process. The S8 is going to be the most incredible android phone ever released – count on it – and I will not miss out just because I can’t plug in a head set that I never use anyway. Looking forward to February!

ok now after being a samsung user from s to s7 edge , note 3 to note 5

Now i believe that they do copy Apple , seriously i don’t care about this 3.5m jack , but why now ? why Apple did it ? if they have to do it ,it should have done far before , why freking now :… No samsung for me afer this , i’ll buy Apple though i hate it, they got a class anyways.

o0MHJ0o
o0MHJ0o

Why?! BOTH companies are after the Chinese and other Asian markets where the lack of headphone jack and thinness of phones is not uncommon, and even in demand. You are going to Apple, why?! your logic makes absolutely no sense, “they have more class”? what BS, how much is Apple paying you people?!

MySchizoBuddy

The same amount Samsung is paying you.

Apple was not the first manufacturer to not include the headphone jack and the Motorola Moto Z which was released before the iPhone 7 was also not the first manufacturer to not include a headphone jack. Several Chinese phone manufacturers have already removed the headphone jack before Apple and Motorola. Who cares what manufacturer does it first?

If you want to get technical the iPhone 8 will have a curved displayed while Samsung already introduced this with the S6 Edge.

I’m goin wireless regardless. I hate those wires tie themselves up in my pocket, and I’m not one of those audio-nerds, so I’m down on anything Samsung’ll do.

dajtw

I only use wireless (earin and bragi) but that does not mean I do not want to lose the earphone jack. I like to see what people will do if they forget their adapter and their wireless runs out of batteries. I’ve already skipped the S6 when they removed the SD card and went for Sony only to return to the S8 when the brought it back. I will not hesitate to skip the S8 and go for something else.

How about a phone with a reasonable thickness and all of the above? This “unreasonably thin phone” fad needs to die.

SoRHunter
SoRHunter

This is a question no one is interested in. I want a phone battery that lasts – put it on a sightly fatter phone and I and many others will rejoice! The headphone jack is a necessity, so leave it there – if Samsung could get a better DAC, the better.

The stereo loudspeaker is questionable – if the S8 will be water-resistant, then the speakers will be covered in a membrane and will sound bad anyway… Stereo speakers and no water-resistant is OK by me. Single speaker and water-resistant is also OK by me.

calzone

Missing option, to do without jack and stereo speakers. Only bigger battery.

Have not used any corded headphones the last 5 years, and have great bluetooth speakers, so no need for stereo speakers.

SAMgalaxyXXX

It can have the 3. I don’t see any reason why they should remove the headphone jack to add stereo speakers and bigger battery, that would just be a lame excuse.

shy2papa

This is BS I want it all Samsung doesn’t have to always copy and paste, Samsung is always trying to follow Apple’s footstep when it should make it own footsteps

Unless you are the original poster, you only interpret the question like the rest of us.
As far as I am concerned , the question is rather simple, and as quoted :
“[Poll] Would you prefer the 3.5mm headphone jack for Galaxy S8 over stereo speakers and bigger battery?”
Answer is, I prefer function over form. Meaning, I prefer to have the option of using wired headphones, even if I can use wireless ones.
And if that means I can have slightly less battery life, by all means so be it.

Peschiera
Peschiera

Guys, if S8 is going to have an Edge Display also on top and button, there is simply no possibility to have space for the 3.5 mm headphone jack.

LeifS

Over stereo speakers -> Absolutely .. I barely use the speaker and actually like that I can cover the current one within a second if it’s suddenly going off and too loud

Over a larger battery -> no.
But I would prefer a thicker phone with both. 10mm is the sweet spot for thickness (for me). Since phones got thinner I always used a case just to make it feel more comfortable in the hand.

Vibgyoar
Vibgyoar

Spot on correct.

The way they phrase these survey questions is like how parents get their kids to bed using a closed question technique: “do you want to go to bed now, or in ten minutes?”

o0MHJ0o
o0MHJ0o

I am with you there, why is being able to silence the phone with a finger classed as a bad thing, I like being able to just drown out the sound if a scene in a movie is too loud, or if someone tricks me into a Facebook moan video, lol.
