Introduction
2020 is the year of 5G for Samsung. We have seen the company expand 5G compatibility to many of its mid-range devices and Samsung has lowered the barrier of entry further with the Galaxy A42 5G. The Galaxy A51 5G had previously been its cheapest 5G smartphone but that title now belongs to the Galaxy A42 5G, at least for the time being and likely throughout the remainder of 2020.
Design
Samsung has opted for a sleek design philosophy for the 2020 Galaxy A series and it has stuck to that for the Galaxy A42 5G. The back panel looks slightly different from other A series handsets as its divided into four sections with a color gradient. The material Samsung has used for this year's lineup is something it calls “glasstic,” which is basically plastic.
All the physical buttons are placed on the right side of the frame. This has been consistent across Samsung smartphones in 2020. The handset has a 6.6-inch Infinity-U HD resolution Super AMOLED display. Unlike Samsung's 2020 Galaxy A series, the cameras are arranged in a square instead of an L-shaped pattern. The phone measures 164.4 x 75.9 x 8.6mm and weighs 193 grams.
Specifications
The Galaxy A42 5G is powered by the Snapdragon 750G chipset from Qualcomm. It features eight Kryo 570 CPU cores operating at a frequency of up to 2.2GHz. The CPU is paired with 4GB / 6GB / 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage expandable via microSD.
The components are powered by a 5,000mAh battery with support for 15W fast charging. Support for 5G will obviously be the biggest draw. The battery is certainly big enough to handle the additional power draw that the next-gen network standard demands.
Other specs include Bluetooth 5 connectivity, an in-display fingerprint scanner, USB-C, and a standard 3.5mm audio port.
Camera
The Galaxy A42 5G features a quad main camera setup that comprises a 48-megapixel primary shooter, an 8-megapixel ultra wide, a 5-megapixel macro, and 5-megapixel depth sensor. A 20-megapixel selfie camera is also present.
Many of Samsung's camera modes such as Pro Mode, Live Focus, Food Mode, Panorama and HDR should also be included. It's unclear if the phone has support for slow motion, super slow motion and hyperlapse videos, but we'll update this page accordingly. Stay tuned.
Software
The Galaxy A42 5G comes with Android 10 out of the box in addition to One UI 2.5. This means that some of Samsung's new features like Quick Share and Music Share are present on the device. However, it's unlikely that the phone will be added to the list of Samsung devices that will get three Android OS upgrades.
Price and Availability
Samsung started selling the Galaxy A42 5G in various markets in November 2020. In most regions the handset is available in black, white and gray colors. It's costs 369 EUR in Europe while in Thailand it was released for the equivalent of $397.
