Introduction

Samsung updates its Galaxy A lineup early in the new year, and it has already started to do that in 2023 with the release of the Galaxy A14, A34, and Galaxy A54.

But sandwiched between the A14 and A34 is the Galaxy A24, which, as its name suggests, is the successor to the Galaxy A23 that was launched in early 2022.

Design

The Galaxy A24 looks nothing like the 2022 model. The display has an Infinity-U notch for the selfie camera instead of an Infinity-V design, and beyond this small detail, everything's changed.

When viewed from the back side, the Galaxy A24 budget phone resembles the Galaxy S23 more than the A23. It has individual cutouts for each camera, and there's no prominent camera bump or contour element.

The Galaxy A24 has a flat display and a flat back panel. The phone's edges are almost flat but slightly curved, and the device measures 162.1 x 77.6 x 8.3mm while weighing 195 grams.

The fingerprint scanner is side-mounted rather than hiding under the display. The frame and back panel share the same color, and speaking of which, Samsung announced four options for the Galaxy A24: Black, Lime Green, Dark Red (Burgundy), and a gradient color. Availability differs by market.

Specifications

Early benchmarks have revealed that the Galaxy A24 runs on the MediaTek Helio G99 chipset even before Samsung made the phone available. But, it is true, the G99 SoC powers this device, and Samsung claims that it should make the phone roughly 1.5 times faster than its predecessor.

The phone comes with 6/8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage expandable via microSD, and it is powered by a 5,000mAh battery with 25W fast charging capabilities. Other specs include a USB-C port, Bluetooth 5.3, and Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac.

Display

The Galaxy A24 no longer uses a PLS LCD panel. Thankfully, Samsung upgraded this device with Super AMOLED display technology, which should provide better contrast and more vivid colors.

Even though the new 6.5-inch panel's refresh rate can only go as high as 90Hz instead of 120Hz, it boasts up to 1,000 nits of brightness.

Camera

Samsung equipped the Galaxy A24 with a 50MP primary camera with an f/1.8 aperture, featuring PDAF and OIS. The phone also has a 5MP ultra-wide shooter (f/2.2) and a 2MP macro sensor (f/2.4). The setup is capable of recording 1080p videos at 30 frames per second.

Compared to the 2022 model, the Galaxy A24 brings an upgraded selfie camera with a higher resolution of 13MP. It also has 1080p video recording capabilities.

Software and features

The Galaxy A24 was announced with Android 13 and One UI 5.1. At launch, Samsung confirmed that the phone will benefit from four major OS upgrades and five years of security patches.

Availability and price

Samsung announced the Galaxy A24 in Vietnam in late April 2023. The 6GB model was released for the equivalent of $276, whereas the 8GB model cost a little under $300.
