TL;DR

  • Remove only hides the app shortcut from the home screen, while the app stays installed and keeps taking storage.
  • Uninstall deletes the app from the phone and frees storage, but system apps can only have their shortcuts removed.
  • Archive partially removes a non-system app to save space while keeping the shortcut and personal data for easier reinstalling.

Ease of use is one of the biggest reasons modern smartphones have become so successful. If you want your phone to do something, there's probably an app for it, and it all works quite intuitively. Getting new apps from the Galaxy Store or Google Play couldn't be much easier.

But what about deleting apps from your Galaxy phone? If you're new to Galaxy devices, the process of removing apps might not seem as intuitive as installing them. For example, what even is the difference between removing and uninstalling an app?

Don't worry. It's simpler than it sounds. Here's everything you need to know.

What happens when you remove or uninstall an app?

Long-press any app on your home screen to open a pop-up menu. For non-system apps, you'll see two options:

  • Remove: Removes the app shortcut from your home screen, but leaves the app installed. This won't free up any storage. You can still launch the app from the apps drawer and add the shortcut back whenever you want.
  • Uninstall: Completely removes the app from your phone and frees up storage space.

If you long-press a pre-installed system app, you'll only see the option to remove its home screen shortcut. System apps can't be uninstalled.

NOTE: Alternatively, you can uninstall apps by long-pressing them in the apps drawer or by going to Settings > Apps > select the app > Uninstall.

What happens when you archive an app in One UI?

The Apps menu in Settings also offers a third option for non-system apps: Archive. Go to Settings > Apps > select the app to find it.

  • Archive: Partially removes the app to reclaim some storage while keeping the app shortcut and your personal data, such as login information. This makes reinstalling and using the app again much easier.

What do Clear cache and Clear data do?

There are two more app management options worth knowing about: Clear cache and Clear data. These are mainly troubleshooting tools rather than storage management features.

  • Clear cache: Deletes temporary files the app has stored, such as downloaded images. Your saved data and login information remain untouched.
  • Clear data: Resets the app to its default state. This removes all saved data, settings, and login information.

Which option should you use?

Most Galaxy users will rarely need to clear an app's cache or data unless they're troubleshooting a problem.

For everyday use, things are simple. Use Remove to clear app shortcuts from your home screen, Uninstall when you no longer need an app and want to free up storage, and Archive if you expect to reinstall the app later without starting from scratch.
