The Galaxy Watch 4 and the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic are the world's first Wear OS 3 smartwatches, but they don't run the stock version of the operating system. Instead, they use Samsung's One UI Watch interface, which ties deeply with One UI on Galaxy smartphones. Google never revealed the actual UI design of Wear OS 3, but its images have finally been revealed.
Google released a new Developer Preview version of Wear OS 3 yesterday. Some people used it in the emulator, revealing the UI design of Wear OS 3. The latest wearable operating system is based on Android 11, and it brings the most significant change since Wear OS 2.0 was launched in early 2017. It brings revamped menu and UI design, including new ways to customize the watch face and tiles. The watch face selection screen now shows the name of the watch face with curved text for better screen real estate usage.
The app drawer lists recently used apps at the top, followed by all the installed apps on the smartwatch. Instead of using a Rolodex-style app drawer, Google is using a simple list. Buttons have a rounded design and a gradient finish. The battery section appears to have been completely redesigned. The sound settings menu has easier-to-use + and – buttons. Like Tizen, Wear OS 3 now shows a small, pill-shaped UI element towards the bottom of the watch face to display media playback information.
Compared to Samsung's One UI Watch, the stock version of Wear OS 3 looks a bit bland, and we don't know how well it would integrate with Android on the paired smartwatch. More Wear OS 3 watches from brands like Casio, Citizen, Fossil, Michael Kors, Mobvoi, Montblanc, Skagen, Suunto, and TAG Heuer will launch sometime next year.
.@Quinny898 tells me this media player behavior is available on the GW4 and was also on Tizen, but I believe this is new to Wear OS as it doesn't happen on my TicWatch. pic.twitter.com/6gKseReaxu
