US buyers will find an Exynos chip in these upcoming Samsung foldables

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you have likely heard by now that Samsung will soon unveil its latest foldable smartphones. However, what you may have missed is that Samsung plans to launch three new foldable phones this year, not just two.

The Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE, the first Fan Edition variant of a foldable Samsung phone, will join the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7. Samsung is also bringing its Exynos chip to a foldable phone for the first time, including in the USA, a country that has long enjoyed the luxury of getting flagship Galaxy phones powered by generally superior Snapdragon chips.

But which of the three new foldables will feature an Exynos chip in the US? That would be both new Flip models. The Galaxy Z Flip 7 will have the recently announced Exynos 2500 chipset, while the Flip 7 FE will use last year’s Exynos 2400. The Exynos 2400 also powered the Galaxy S24 FE worldwide, including the US.

Should you be concerned about having an Exynos chip in these new Flips? At least in the case of the FE model, the answer is no. The Exynos 2400 is a fantastic chip. It performs similarly to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 that powered the Galaxy S24 series stateside, is highly efficient, and stays cool under pressure. And because it’s Samsung’s in-house chip, it likely contributes to the FE being more affordable than the Flip 6 or Flip 7.

As for the Exynos 2500, early performance numbers look impressive. But its efficiency and thermals will only become clear once the Galaxy Z Flip 7 is released and thoroughly tested. We do think it is a better fit for a thin phone like the Flip 7 compared to the Snapdragon 8 Elite, which tends to run hot when pushed to the limit, something that can affect battery life and temperature.

The Galaxy Z Fold 7 will be the only new foldable to use the Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset. All devices will be unveiled at Samsung's Galaxy Unpacked event on July 9, where the company will also introduce the new Galaxy Watch 8 and Galaxy Watch 8 Classic smartwatches (which, incidentally, will be powered by Exynos chips like their predecessors).
