TL;DR

  • The Galaxy Z Fold 8 pairs a thinner, lighter body with wider screens that better fit media, multitasking, and productivity.
  • Its brighter AMOLED displays, reduced crease visibility, and more durable hinge improve visibility and the foldable experience.
  • It adds Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, UWB, silicon-carbon batteries, and Samsung's fastest foldable charging to date.

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is arguably Samsung's most impressive new device this year. Samsung has used the knowledge gained from developing seven generations of foldable smartphones to shape a new form factor. It offers immersive media consumption and improved productivity.

The company has also introduced new battery, display, and hinge technologies with its new foldable. Here are the top five Galaxy Z Fold 8 features that impressed us.

1. Versatile form factor with a thin and lightweight body

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 has a shorter, wider design with a 5.5-inch cover screen and a 7.6-inch inner foldable screen. Combined, these screens are suitable for a variety of usage scenarios.

The cover screen has a 10:16 aspect ratio, making it well suited for using apps and watching vertical videos, such as Instagram Reels, TikTok, and YouTube Shorts. When you rotate it to landscape orientation, the same cover screen is suitable for watching regular videos, including movies and TV shows.

The inner foldable screen has a 4:3 aspect ratio in landscape orientation and is suitable for browsing the web, watching horizontal videos, and using productivity apps. In portrait orientation, it is well suited for using a single app, two apps side by side in split-screen mode, or browsing the web.

With such versatile screens, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is flexible enough to suit almost all your media consumption and productivity needs. All of this comes in a thin, lightweight body. The phone is 4.5mm thin when unfolded and 9.7mm thin when folded. It also weighs just 201g, making it Samsung's lightest book-style foldable phone ever.

2. Brighter screen with reduced crease visibility

Its cover and inner Dynamic AMOLED 2X screens use newer-generation OLED panels that can reach up to 3,000 nits of peak brightness. This makes them brighter than the Galaxy Z Fold 7's 2,600-nit displays.

The inner screen also features an anti-reflective coating that reduces glare and reflections by up to 50% compared with previous-generation Galaxy Z Fold phones.

Samsung has also used a Flex Titanium hinge mechanism that makes the inner screen stronger and appear flatter. This improves the screen's durability and reduces crease visibility.

These improvements make the screens easier to see in a variety of conditions, especially outdoors or around bright light sources.

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 also comes with advanced wireless connectivity features, including Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, and UWB. These features make wireless connections to Wi-Fi networks and accessories more reliable and stable.

4. Silicon-carbon batteries

Samsung has used silicon-carbon anode batteries in its phones for the first time with the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 has a 4,800mAh battery, while the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra has a 5,000mAh battery.

While the company has not increased battery capacity to 6,000mAh like some of its competitors, it has ensured that its foldable devices remain among the lightest in the industry, offering a balance between ergonomics and battery life.

5. Faster wired and wireless charging

The South Korean firm has equipped the Galaxy Z Fold 8 with 45W fast wired charging (Super Fast Charging 2.0) and 20W fast wireless charging (Fast Wireless Charging 2.0). The phone can charge from 0% to 63% in just 30 minutes, offering enough power to get through most of a busy day.
