Samsung is the undisputed leader in the foldable segment but that lead could soon be seriously challenged. Apple is expected to launch its first foldable iPhone later this year and that would give Galaxy Z Fold devices their first serious global competitor, particularly in the United States.
TM Roh, CEO of Samsung Electronics and the head of its mobile division, isn't too concerned about Apple's entry into this segment.
Speaking to the media after yesterday's Unpacked event in London, Roh said that the technological prowess and understanding of the customer that Samsung has gained over seven years in the foldable segment “cannot be caught up with overnight.” He added that even if competition becomes more fierce, Samsung will only extend its lead by “setting new standards.”
It's true that Apple won't have the depth in its foldable lineup that Samsung has. Its first foldable iPhone will be closer to the new Galaxy Z Fold 8 as a competitor rather than the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra.
Samsung has a clamshell option in the Galaxy Z Flip series as well while Apple doesn't seem to be making one any time soon. The Galaxy Z TriFold was a demonstration by Samsung that it can push the envelope further and it still has the option of making rollable phones in its pocket.
The company is making it abundantly clear that while Apple may choose to challenge it in the segment Samsung has popularized, it won't let Apple win market share without a fight.
