Twitter user Chad Christian posted a video of an unfortunate Galaxy Z Fold 3 bellowing smoke. He went on to clarify that the issue was not with the phone itself and that the battery could have sustained structural damage after falling off a bike. It seems that the phone held its own for a week before the battery went belly up, right as he was about to ship the phone back to Samsung.
Now, it is quite common for a smartphone to take a tumble or two outdoors. Most OEMs rigorously drop test their devices to ensure that they survive the fall. The problem here is that the Galaxy Z Fold 3 isn't your garden variety smartphone. The sheer number of moving parts in the equation makes it a lot more fragile than a corresponding Galaxy smartphone, despite all the durability improvements Samsung has managed to cram in.
So, the moral of the story here is that it is best to leave your Galaxy Z Fold 3 indoors whenever possible. If not, make sure that you secure it properly. Watching a $1,800 phone go up in flames can be quite painful, and the last thing Samsung wants is more bad PR around its batteries.
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 blew up on me when I was getting ready to box it up. Had to throw it in the garage. Definitely had some integrity damage. Can you imagine if it did this in shipping 🙁 pic.twitter.com/OnPHfZmKod
