They're not happy with the company's compensation plan, and are staging rallies to try to get Samsung to offer a better deal.
Samsung Electronics has been making record profits over the past year, primarily due to the rise in memory chip prices. This led to record bonus compensation for the semiconductor division employees who received an average bonus of over $339,000.
Despite the record profits for the entire company, the mobile division is actually on track to post its first ever annual loss. Ironically, its profits have been hurt by higher chip prices that have contributed to Samsung's record profits.
The Donghaeng Union, which counts employees from the mobile division as its members, claim that the division's members were excluded from the special performance bonus that was given to employees of the chip division. They want Samsung to apologize for the exclusion, provide a cash compensation plan for the members, and establish a joint bargaining system for 2027.
Their ask might prove tough, as the Donghaeng Union had previously withdrawn voluntarily during the bargaining process, because they felt those negotiations were too focused on the chip division. An agreement was reached between this union and management earlier this year where treasury stock worth 6 million won or roughly $4,400 was agreed for every mobile division employee.
The union is currently staging off-site rallies and it remains to be see if they indulge in more coercive action, which could include strikes. Samsung is yet to comment on the matter.
