Today's wearable market consists mostly of smartwatches and wireless earbuds, but there may come a time when smart contact lenses will also be on the list. Market watchers expect this emerging segment to explode, and Samsung is one of the companies that will lead the charge.

Smart contact lenses are a technology of the future, but market analysts believe that this future could be coming in full force. Even though no smart contact lenses are commercially available, several companies are experimenting with this emerging technology. Samsung is one of them.

Samsung to be among the first smart contact lens manufacturer

The smart contact lenses market “is expected to boom,” say analysts from GlobalMarketVision (via Political Beef). It may take a while before smart contact lenses become widely available, but once it does, market watchers believe this emerging technology is going to explode in popularity.

Samsung is one of the main players in the growing smart contact lenses market, along with Sony, Google, and Sensimed AG.

And believe it or not, this isn't the first time we've heard about Samsung's potential involvement with manufacturing smart contact lenses. The company applied for a patent on smart contact lenses back in 2016. And two years prior to that, Samsung applied to trademark the “Gear Blink” brand in South Korea, which may or may not be related to smart eyewear.

Regardless of how the smart contact lenses market will evolve, Samsung has been working on and researching various optics-related smart technologies for more than half a decade now. Perhaps the company had the foresight and laid down the groundwork for the emerging smart lenses market that could eventually boom.

There's no telling when or if the first commercially-viable smart contact lenses will be produced, but this technology may drastically change the mobile game, and Samsung could be right in the middle of it when it happens.

Samsung’s top acquisitions man returns as big deals expected

Samsung has not participated in the mergers and acquisitions market for more than 7 years, despite having more than $60 billion in cash that it could use to buy new companies. Its absence from this space was also partly due to the legal troubles of heir Lee Jae-yong, who only recently returned to the top […]

Samsung’s product naming has a grammar problem

Samsung’s product naming has a grammar problem

I'm a big fan of Samsung using proper nouns to label most of its home electronics. For instance, PC monitors names are no longer just a string of seemingly random letters and numbers. Instead, they belong to lineups named ‘Odyssey' or ‘ViewFinity.' It makes Samsung look better instead of coming across as a company that […]
