Even though the existing foldable devices haven't become ubiquitous, people are already wondering what comes next. Samsung's current devices fold only once down the center. What if there were bi-fold or even tri-fold panels?

That would certainly be the stuff of dreams. It will bring a whole new level of versatility to mobile devices. Samsung has been working on just that. The company has shown us a glimpse of this future with its Flex S and Flex G panels at CES 2022.

Flex S and Flex G can prove to be gamechangers

The Flex S panel can be utilized for a multi-foldable product. The bi-folding panel opens up in an “S” shape, allowing for a significant expansion of the screen real estate. It provides unparalleled flexibility, enabling users to utilize a device as a smartphone, tablet or AI device, as they can separate a display depending on how they fold the device.

The Flex G panel has been developed for multi-foldable products with an inward fold. This unique “G” shape of the panel allows for the display to be protected from external impact or scratches. That's not the only benefit of this in-folding concept, it also allows for the device to be more portable since it can be folded twice.

Samsung Display gave us a glimpse of these panels at CES 2022 in Las Vegas today. We've already seen many Samsung patents highlighting these ideas, but it was great seeing all of this in the flesh. Whether or not these panels will find their way into Samsung smartphones remains to be seen. A lot of you might agree that it needs to happen sooner rather than later!
