The South Korean firm showcased the world's first QD-LED panel at the SID 2024 expo. If you've heard of something similar already, you might be thinking about QD-OLED panels that are very different from QD-LED that Samsung Display recently showcased.
QD-LED lacks the organic material that makes QD-OLED (and all other OLED) panels susceptible to burn-in issues. QD-LED panels feature pixels made using semiconductor material, and they can create RGB colors and backlight. So, in theory, it is like OLED and Micro LED panels, but it lacks organic material that is susceptible to damage in the long run.
According to Samsung Display, QD-LED panels can accurately reproduce a wide color gamut. Moreover, thanks to stable material properties, manufacturing those panels is easier through inkjet printing. Samsung showcased a monitor with an 18.2-inch QD-LED panel with a 3,200 x 1,800 pixels resolution, 202ppi pixel density, and 250 nits brightness.
QD-LED panels use cadmium-free quantum dots, which are great for the environment. Research papers on this technology were awarded the Best Paper Of The Year by SID.

At the same event, Samsung Display showcased the world's first 31.5-inch 4K 240Hz screen and 27-inch 360Hz gaming QD-OLED panels. The company also showcased a 65-inch 4K QD-OLED TV panel with 3,000 nits peak brightness.
The South Korean firm also showcased Ultra-Thin OLED panels for laptops and monitors that are 20% lighter and thinner than rigid OLED panels. By using a full oxide backplane, the refresh rate of these panels can be dialed down to just 1Hz. This can reduce power consumption by more than 40%, improving laptop battery life.
A Samsung Display representative said, “We are pleased to showcase Samsung Display's outstanding foldable competitiveness along with innovative next-generation technologies that can lead the IT and XR era at this exhibition, which is attended by the world's leading scholars and display experts. We believe this event will serve as an opportunity to showcase the infinite scalability and growth potential of display technology.”
