Responding to customer demand, Samsung Display wants to upgrade its automotive OLED display technology and improve its mass production capacity for tandem OLED. According to a recent report from Korea, Samsung intends to develop all-new tandem OLED for in-car display systems.

The tech giant has previously supplied Audi with tandem OLED displays in relatively small quantities. However, the automotive industry is increasing its demand for this technology, and Samsung Display wants a bigger share of the growing market.

If the tandem OLED display sounds familiar, it's likely because Samsung Display has supplied this tech before for a different segment. Apple switched from single-stack to tandem OLED displays for its 2024 iPad Pro. And who was one of Apple's main suppliers? That's right. It was Samsung.

Tandem OLED panels combine two stacks of RGB layers that, as you may have guessed, work in tandem. This technology improves the durability of OLED panels, reduces power consumption, and increases brightness.

Although reduced power consumption is likely one of the least important benefits of using tandem OLED for in-car display systems, it's easy to understand why car manufacturers, particularly in the premium segment, want to use tandem OLED over traditional single-stack OLED solutions.

Higher durability is an obvious perk for in-car display systems, as they can't be easily replaced if damaged. Furthermore, increased brightness enhances the driver experience, as brighter in-car displays are easier to read on sunny days.

Reportedly, Samsung not only wants to increase its production capacity for tandem OLED but also aims to develop flexible tandem OLED panels for its upper-tier automotive customers.
