Samsung has a habit of bringing good features to its products only to abandon them later. One such great feature was dual aperture that the company introduced with the Galaxy S9 series back in 2018 and then discontinued it just two years later with the Galaxy S20.

Chinese tipster Digital Chat Station (DCS) claims that Samsung is considering bringing back the variable aperture feature for its future phones. The South Korean firm has already started testing it again based on the assumption that future iPhones will also have a similar feature.

Variable aperture is an adjustable opening in a camera lens that controls how much light hits the camera sensor. When there is too much light, such as in a bright sunlit environment, the aperture's opening can be narrowed to control the light. And in low-light situations, such as during the night, light intake can be maximized by fully opening the aperture.

  • Narrower aperture: Letting in less light and having a deep depth-of-field.
  • Wider aperture: Letting in more light and having a shallow depth-of-field.

A variable aperture lens is generally found in professional DSLR and mirrorless cameras. Some Chinese smartphone brands have also started using it in their recent high-end models. It has been rumored that future iPhones could have a variable aperture lens, and this is why Samsung is planning to bring the feature to its future high-end Galaxy phones.

It is likely that this feature would be used in the Galaxy S27 series, especially the Galaxy S27 Ultra. The Galaxy S26 series won't have this feature, at least based on leaked features and specifications through various reports.
