Samsung's quantum dot display technology is environmental friendly

In 2014, Samsung developed quantum dot material that doesn’t use cadmium, making it the first brand to do so. The year after that, the South Korean tech giant utilised the technology for its TVs and started offering models with QD sheets, which not only enhanced colors but also brightness.

Samsung’s QD technology quickly became popular and other brands started adopting it too. Currently Samsung uses it for LCD as well as OLED TVs and monitors. Well, ten years after the inception, Samsung QD technology has finally received certification that it is environment-friendly.

Samsung has announced that the quantum dot sheet it uses in its TVs has received certification that it is compliant with the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive and that it does not contain cadmium from Société Générale de Surveillance (SGS).

Commenting on this achievement, Samsung Electronics’ Executive Vice President of Visual Display Business, Taeyong Son, said “Samsung’s quantum dot TVs are built on safe technology that complies with restrictions on hazardous substances while delivering unmatched picture quality. Achieving SGS certification fully validates the safety of our products. With this recognition, we are committed to continuously developing sustainable display technologies.”
