Samsung has announced that five of its memory products have received global recognition from Carbon Trust for reducing carbon emissions. 20 other memory products and four automotive LED packages from the South Korean firm have received the carbon footprint certification.

The Portable SSD T7 (1TB), EVO Select (128GB) MicroSD cards, GDDR6 (8GB) VRAM, HBM2E (8GB) memory chip, and UFS 3.1 (512GB) storage chips have received the ‘Reducing CO2' certification from Carbon Trust. The South Korean firm's 20 other memory products have received the ‘CO2 Measured' certification. The automotive LED products to receive the carbon verification from UL are Gen3 3W White LED, Gen3 3W Amber LED, Gen2 3W White LED, and Gen2 3W Amber LED.

Carbon Trust is an independent organization that helps and advises companies for a sustainable and low-carbon world. It certifies the environmental carbon footprint of firms, their products, and their complete supply chains.

The ‘Reducing CO2' label means that the product's carbon emission has decreased, and Samsung was able to achieve this through enhanced semiconductor production efficiency. Before a product's carbon reduction is certified, its current carbon footprint must be measured to set a baseline.

According to the company's estimates, the volume of carbon emissions reduced from its five memory products after their release (until July 2021) amounts to 680,000 metric tons of CO2. It is equivalent to 11.3 million urban tree seedlings grown for 10 years or greenhouse gas emissions from 149,000 cars when they are driven for one year.

Seong-dai Jang, Senior Vice President and Head of DS Corporate Sustainability Management Office at Samsung Electronics, said, “It is exciting to see our environmentally sustainable efforts receiving global acknowledgements. We will continue our path towards a sustainable future with ‘greener’ chips enabled by Samsung’s cutting-edge technology.
