The South Korean firm's new LPDDR5X DRAM chip can be used in laptops, smartphones, and tablets. It is fabricated using 12nm class process technology, which is quite advanced in the memory segment. Samsung also claims its new chip is the most compact in the LPDDR segment, paving the way for more compact and thinner devices. The new chip offers 25% faster performance and 30% higher capacity.
Moreover, the new chip is claimed to be optimized for better AI inferencing. With the surge in on-device AI processing in computers, laptops, smartphones, and tablets, such devices need high-speed and power-efficient memory. The single-package capacity of the new chip has been increased to 32GB, making it an optimal solution for on-device AI. These chips will be verified in the second half of this year, and they could be ready for flagship chips by the end of this year.
YongCheol Bae, Executive VP of Memory Product Planning of the Memory Business at Samsung Electronics, said, “As demand for low-power, high-performance memory increases, LPDDR DRAM is expected to expand its applications from mainly mobile to other areas that traditionally require higher performance and reliability such as PCs, accelerators, servers, and automobiles. Samsung will continue to innovate and deliver optimized products for the upcoming on-device AI era through close collaboration with customers.”
Author's Note: Looking at the verification timelines for Samsung's new 10.7Gbps LPDDR5X DRAM chips, it appears that they will likely be used with next-generation flagship smartphone chips, including the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, MediaTek Dimensity 9400, and Samsung's Exynos 2500 (tentative naming). So, most high-end smartphones launching later this year or early next year (including Galaxy S25) could use these new memory chips.
These chips will likely be used in laptops with Intel's 14th Gen. CPUs and AMD's Ryzen 8000 series CPUs.
