Samsung is looking back at the wearable history leading to the Galaxy Ring

The Galaxy Ring might be a breakthrough in smart wearable technology, and even Samsung is now looking back at the history of its wearable devices to commemorate its journey before the Galaxy Ring takes center stage later this year.

This week, Samsung published an infographic detailing the history of its wearable devices, including watches, headsets/earphones, and fitness trackers.

Samsung says its journey began in 1999 with the SPH-WP10 wearable, which was the “world's first commercialized watch phone.” It was far from a modern-day smartwatch but did combine some functionalities of the digital watch and feature phone of that era.

The infographic also shows the Watch Phone, released in 2003, Samsung's first Bluetooth headset from 2005, the GT-S9110 from 2009, and the Gear from 2013 among other wearables.

    Story continues after the video

Looking at the infographic below, it's evident that 2014 is when Samsung began experimenting with more wearable devices, particularly smartwatches, fitness trackers, and wireless earbuds. That's when Samsung started selling more than one wearable model per year.

The most recent available wearable mentioned in Samsung's infographic is the Galaxy Fit 3, which boasts massive improvements over the previous generations of fitness bands and a complete redesign.

The Galaxy Watch 6 is the latest smartwatch series, which may or may not be replaced by a new one later this year. And the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro are Samsung's high-end wireless earbuds, complemented by the budget-oriented Galaxy Buds FE.

Galaxy Ring should be coming this summer

Samsung first unveiled the Galaxy Ring behind a secure glass case at Mobile World Congress 2024. The company teased the ring and some of its capabilities, and the next-gen wearable already feels like a hit, judging by the public's reaction to it so far.

We were able to see the Galaxy Ring in person and capture it on camera (see the video above), but nobody could try it out. Spec-wise, Samsung told us that the Galaxy Ring will deliver almost two weeks of battery life on a single charge and more advanced sleep tracking capabilities than current Galaxy Watches.

Although the Galaxy Ring is still evolving — meaning the one at MWC might not be the final form — Samsung showcased the prototype in nine sizes and three color options, gold, silver, and black.

Samsung will likely officially launch the Galaxy Ring at the next Unpacked event, whose July 10 date we exclusively revealed last week.
