In December 2024, Google and Samsung unveiled Project Moohan, the first prototype XR headset that the two brands jointly developed. More specifically, Samsung made its hardware and Google provided it with the OS, which is Android XR. Based on Project Moohan, the South Korean tech giant is developing an XR headset for consumers, which we expect to arrive as Galaxy XR, and the brand recently confirmed that it will launch the headset by the end of this year.
So far, Samsung has showcased the Project Moohan on a few occasions, which revealed quite a lot about it. However, there wasn’t a lot of information available about the brand's first XR headset that people will be able to buy, apart from its launch timeframe. Well, not anymore. A massive leak about Samsung’s upcoming XR headset, which will directly rival Apple's Vision Pro, reveals its renders, information about its hardware and software, price, and much more. Let’s take a look.
The leak reveals renders of the Galaxy XR, showing it from all angles. As you can see, it looks almost identical to Project Moohan.
The Galaxy XR will feature two micro-OLED displays, one for each eye. Each display will have a 4K resolution for a pixel density of 4,032 PPI. It means that two displays will account for around 29 million pixels in total. In comparison, Apple’s Vision Pro offers 23 million pixels across the two displays. The publication says that Samsung is promising “vivid image and true-to-life colors.”
There will be detachable light shields around the displays, which will block the view of the outside world to offer a more immersive user experience. The Galaxy XR will offer two speakers, one of the left and one of the right. Each speaker will have a woofer and a tweeter. As for microphones, you get four of them at the bottom. They can capture sound coming from all directions.
As for the processor, Galaxy XR will use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 just like the Project Moohan, as expected.
The Galaxy XR will let you use your eyes, hands, and voice to control the headset. For recognising hand gestures, the headset has four sensors at the front (one at the top-left, one at the top-right, one at the bottom-left, and one at the bottom-right) and two at the bottom of the headset (placed next to the nose cutout). As for tracking your eye movement, inside each display cutout, there are two cameras with infrared LEDs, for a total of four cameras. They will be capable of detecting where your pupil is.
When it comes to recognising your voice, the four microphones at the bottom will be able to capture sound coming from all directions. Interestingly, it will be able to separate speech patterns, or in other words, it can differentiate what you are saying and what people around you are saying. The Galaxy XR will come with two controllers, as you can see in the images below. These controllers feature 6 DoF and analog sticks, and offer haptic feedback. They will also be able to track your movements accurately.
On the left-hand side of the headset, there is a power connector, which will let you connect the headset’s external battery pack. On the right-hand side of the headset, there’s a touchpad. According to AH, tapping and holding will recenter content, and tapping twice will make the headset switch between VR Mode and Pass-Through Mode.
At the top of the headset, there are two buttons, one on the left and one on the right. The button on the left is for controlling volume, and the one on the right is called the Top Button. Tapping it will bring up all the apps, and tapping and holding will summon Gemini. At the bottom, there are vents, most likely to help with the SoC's temperatures.
At the front, there are also two cameras for capturing the world around you, as well as a depth sensor, which will enable the headset to understand the environment in a better way, such as recognising walls. Reportedly, the Galaxy XR will offer 2.5 hours of video playback and two hours of general use.
According to AH, the Galaxy XR will weigh 545 grams. As you can see in the images above, it will feature a headband, which will prevent the load of the headset from falling on your nose or ear temples. This headband will have a dial, which will let you adjust its length. Reportedly, Samsung has used cushions immensely, and the headset will be very comfortable to wear.
The story is developing…
