Samsung Galaxy XR

Samsung's Galaxy XR (tentative name) will be the world's first XR headset to run the Android XR operating system. It features high-end hardware, such as two 4K OLEDoS displays, automatically focusing lenses, several cameras and sensors, and the flagship Snapdragon XR processor.

It was first displayed as the ‘Project Moohan' prototype. The fully finished product is aimed at competing with Apple's Vision Pro mixed-reality headset.

The Galaxy XR appears like a VR headset featuring a mix of fabric, glass, plastic, and metal parts. At the top, there is a power button and a volume rocker. On the right side, the headset has a touchpad for scrolling through the UI.

On the front, there are several cameras and sensors, and you can cover them using a face plate. The face plate reduces the amount of light entering your eyes and offers deeper immersion.

You have to wear the headset on your head in a way that the displays sit directly in front of your eyes. The strap, which is made of plastic and fabric can be adjusted manually for a perfect fit.

Samsung has reportedly equipped the Galaxy XR headset with two 1.3-inch OLEDoS panels made by Sony. They are expected to have a 4K resolution, a pixel density of 3,800ppi, and a 90Hz variable refresh rate. The pancake form factor lenses over those displays adjust automatically to keep the visuals in focus (using two eye-tracking cameras) with respect to the wearer's eyes.

The headset also has onboard stereo speakers, but it will likely offer an option to pair wired or wireless earphones (via Bluetooth) for improved audio performance.

The Galaxy XR headset is likely equipped with Qualcomm's Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 processor, which has hexa-core CPU featuring one Cortex-X3 core, two Cortex-A715 cores, and three Cortex-A510 cores. It has the Adreno 740 GPU that can drive two 4.3K resolution screens at a 90Hz refresh rate.

The chip features integrated 5G, Wi-Fi 7, and Bluetooth 5.3 for wireless connectivity. The processor is likely paired with 16GB RAM and 256GB internal storage.

The device has at least eight front-facing cameras and sensors to track your location in the room (or any space) and your hands and fingers for UI navigation.

The Galaxy XR headset will be powered by an external battery pack that is connected via a USB Type-C cable on one end and a magnetic attachment on the other end.

The device runs Android XR operation system with deep integration with Google's services, including Gemini Advanced and Gemini Live. It can run all Android apps and games, but the ones with optimizations for XR headsets will have completely immersive full-screen visuals and additional features.

The device will likely have deep integration with Samsung's Galaxy ecosystem services, Galaxy smartphones and tablets, and Galaxy wearables like the Galaxy Ring or the Galaxy Watch.

Samsung has not announced the price of its Galaxy XR headset yet, but it is expected that the company's first XR headset could be priced over the $2,500 mark in the USA.

The Galaxy XR headset could launch before the end of this year and go on sale in select markets a few days after the announcement. The device will likely be available in just one color.
