TL;DR

  • Samsung says its first smart glasses are meant to extend the mobile experience, not replace smartphones.
  • The company says its smartphone expertise will help it deliver lighter, more comfortable glasses with expected features.
  • Samsung says it used smartphone-level durability testing, including drop tests and 20 new tests, to improve reliability.

Samsung is going up against Meta in the smart glasses domain as the latter is currently the dominant player in the market. Samsung's first attempt is the result of a collaboration with Google, Qualcomm alongside eyewear brands Gentle Monster and Warby Parker.

The company has shed more light on its philosophy behind this product, and how its smart glasses will differentiate themselves from Meta's.

Its technological prowess comes in handy

Samsung Electronics Head of Extended Reality Research & Development Team Choi Jae-in said during a press briefing after Unpacked earlier this week that the company's smart glasses are a “wearable device made by a smartphone specialist.” They're not intended to replace smartphones but to extend the mobile experience.

Choi highlighted that as the first smartphone brand to enter the smart glasses market, Samsung's technological prowess will enable it to deliver a lightweight and comfortable experience while delivering features users expect.

A key difference in Samsung's product will lie in what Choi described as “mobile-grade quality assurance.” Samsung has tested the durability and reliability of smart glasses upon the same standards it uses for smartphones, including drop tests, harsh outdoor conditions, and even chemicals such as sunscreen and cosmetics. Samsung also created 20 new testing methods for the smart glasses to ensure exceptional durability.

Compared to Meta, Choi said that Samsung is taking a “different approach and different technological direction” for its smart glasses, adding that Samsung has worked to reduce weight and improve comfort so that the smart glasses are comfortable to wear throughout the day.
