Everyone's chasing after Samsung to secure adequate memory chip supplies, and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is the latest to make that trip to South Korea.
Following reports of his trip, Samsung has itself confirmed that the CEO of ChatGPT-maker OpenAI has made a visit to its home country and met with the company's top executives.
Bloomberg first reported that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman met with Samsung Group's top executives in South Korea on Saturday, October 30, to deepen cooperation on memory chips and AI infrastructure.
The trip appears to have been rescheduled, as he was previously expected to visit South Korea a few months ago, but that trip was reportedly canceled due to personal reasons.
Samsung hosted the talks in Yongin, south of Seoul, with about 50 executives from its electronics, financial and biotechnology affiliates, the company said in a statement. They discussed how AI can reshape industries, corporate decision-making and business opportunities over the next decade.
While no new deals for memory chip supply were announced, it's hard to imagine that this wasn't a part of the conversation. Altman previously visited South Korea last year, back when memory chip prices had only just started to go on a tear.
Samsung obviously hasn't confirmed this, but other reports from local media suggest that Altman met with executives at SK Hynix as well, another top memory chip supplier that has also become crucial to the AI supply chain.
