Samsung Electronics chief Jay Y. Lee reportedly met OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Softbank Group head Masayoshi Son earlier today. During this meeting, the three executives discussed possible cooperation in the AI segment. This is Lee's first business meeting after getting freed from legal issues.
Samsung could join OpenAI's Project Stargate for AI collaboration
Amidst the ever-changing AI landscape, OpenAI, Samsung, and Softbank seem to think that they can help each other by collaborating. During the rare trilateral meeting between Lee, Altman, and Son, which happened in Seoul, South Korea, the three executives reportedly discussed OpenAI's Project Stargate.
Project Stargate is a $500 billion initiative that aims to build cutting-edge infrastructure in the USA to support OpenAI's ambitions. MGX, Oracle, and Softbank have already announced that they will fund a part of the project. OpenAI will also work with Arm, Microsoft, and Nvidia, who will be among the technology partners for Project Stargate.
Yesterday, Altman and Son announced SB OpenAI Japan, a joint venture between OpenAI and SoftBank. Today, Altman hinted that South Korean firms will be involved in the ambitious Stargate Project.
During an interview with the press, Altman said, “On Stargate, there will be many Korean companies that are important contributors to the ecosystem. I don't want to pronounce anything, but you can probably guess some of the most important partnerships are there.”
It is expected that Samsung could pitch in with funding for Project Stargate. Samsung Foundry could also help OpenAI fabricate cutting-edge chips required for AI processing, while Samsung Device Solutions could supply semiconductor memory chips (like high bandwidth memory or HBM) to OpenAI.
