Older Galaxy foldable phones may yet get Galaxy AI at some point

The Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 received Galaxy AI through a One UI 6.1 update last week. Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4 owners feel left out, but not everything's lost.

To begin with, Galaxy device users have some alternatives to Galaxy AI. You could, for example, create Generative Wallpapers on your Galaxy Z Flip 4 or Z Fold 4 using the Wallpapers by Google app. Or you could summarize online articles using Microsoft's ChatGPT4-powered Edge browser for Android.

Alternatives to some Galaxy AI features already exist, and you can try them out on your Galaxy Z Fold and Flip as we speak. But what about the real thing? Surely, Samsung would like you to use its AI systems rather than a rival's AI. So, will Samsung ever bring true Galaxy AI features to the 2022 foldable phones?

Samsung is testing Galaxy AI for older phones but nothing's certain

Here's a bit of good news. Even though Samsung said it is limiting Galaxy AI to 2023 phones due to time constraints and resources, the company later confirmed that it has been testing Galaxy AI features for older-than-2023 phones.

Some Galaxy AI features work on-device, which is why we are unlikely to see them on mid-range Galaxy A phones anytime soon. However, 2022 high-end phones should, in theory, be powerful enough to run any Galaxy AI system. And besides, Samsung says its Galaxy AI suite is aiming for a hybrid AI system that “combines cloud-based and on-device AI technology.”

Interestingly, during the 55th annual general shareholder meeting in March, TM Roh confirmed that Samsung is testing Galaxy AI features for older high-end phones. No names were given, but older-than-2023 should, in theory, include the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4. They certainly should be powerful enough to run Samsung's Advanced Intelligence tools without difficulties.

So, this is where we currently stand. There's no confirmation that the 2022 foldable phones will ever get Galaxy AI, but there's hope yet. At least somewhere in Samsung's labs, engineers might be testing Galaxy AI features for your foldable phone as we speak. And if this won't pan out in our favor, at least there are some alternatives on the market.
