Yesterday, it was reported that Samsung might use MediaTek's next flagship chip instead of its in-house Exynos chip in some Galaxy S25 models. Today, MediaTek has announced its newest flagship chip, the Dimensity 9400, which will be used in several high-end Android smartphones.

MediaTek announces Dimensity 9400, the first 3nm chip for Android phones

MediaTek has beat Qualcomm in launching the first 3nm chip for Android smartphones. It has announced its next-generation flagship smartphone chip, the Dimensity 9400, which will compete with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite and Apple's A18 Pro. It is made using TSMC's 3nm (N3E) process node.

MediaTek claims its new chip offers 35% faster single-core CPU performance, 28% faster multi-core CPU performance, and 41% faster GPU performance.

It has an octa-core CPU featuring one Cortex-X925 CPU core running at 3.63GHz, three Cortex-X4 CPU cores clocked at 3.3GHz, and four Cortex-A720 CPU cores clocked at 2.4GHz. Its Arm Immortalis-G925 GPU, running at 1,612MHz, has 40% faster performance in ray-tracing graphics and 44% improved power efficiency.

The GPU can drive WQHD+ resolution screens a 180Hz refresh rate. It supports Dolby Vision, HDR10, and HDR10+. It also supports devices with tri-fold screens.

The chip is designed to be paired with 10.7 Gbps LPDDR5X RAM, the fastest yet in the Android ecosystem. MediaTek has doubled the L2 cache memory to 3.5MB, improved the L3 cache by 50% to 12MB, and features 10MB system-level cache (SLC).

The onboard NPU 890 is now claimed to offer 35% improved power efficiency compared to the Dimensity 9300. It provides onboard AI processing like generative fill for crisp and clear photos at up to 100x zoom level. It also aids in improved power efficiency for 4K 60fps video recording.

The story continues after our Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra video below. You can watch the performance of the Dimensity 9300+ chip in comparison with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 in the video.

The Dimensity 9400 processor's Imagiq 1090 ISP supports up to 320MP camera sensors. It can capture 4K 60fps in SDR and HDR, 8K 60fps videos in SDR, and 8K 30fps videos in HDR. MediaTek claims the chip can record 4K 60fps videos at all zoom levels, which is great for consumers.

The Dimensity 9400's built-in modem supports mmWave and sub-6GHz 5G networks. It supports 2G, 3G, and 4G cellular networks, too. Other connectivity features include Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, NFC, and USB Type-C port.

The new MediaTek chip supports several location and navigation standards, including BeiDou (B1I + B1C + B2a + B2b), Galileo (E1 + E5a + E5b), GLONASS (L10F), GPS (L1CA + L5 + L1C), NavIC L5, and QZSS (L1CA + L5).

Galaxy S25 could possibly use Dimensity 9400 chip in some markets

MediaTek has confirmed that its new chip has already been sent to Android smartphone makers. The Oppo Find X8 and the Vivo X200 will reportedly use the Dimensity 9400 chip and could be launched next month.

Some reports claim that Samsung could ditch its in-house Exynos 2500 chip for the Galaxy S25 and the Galaxy S25+ in some countries in favor of the Dimensity 9400.
