Samsung went the extra mile to reduce the thickness of its foldable phones last year, particularly the Galaxy Z Fold 7, but the journey is clearly not over yet.
With new foldable form factors starting to show up, hinge design is becoming even more important, and Samsung seems willing to keep pushing the limits rather than settling for its current achievements.
A new rumor, citing sources in Samsung’s supply chain, says the company is already working on a new hinge for the second-generation Galaxy Z TriFold.
The Galaxy Z TriFold 2 will need to be thinner than the first model. And to get there, Samsung is reportedly developing an “entirely new hinge solution” from the ground up.
For reference, the Galaxy Z TriFold measures between 3.9 and 4.2mm thin when unfolded and 12.9mm thick when folded.
There is some good news for foldable phone fans who might be interested in the TriFold form factor. Namely, the work that goes into redesigning the new TriFold 2 hinge will also benefit Samsung's other foldable phone models.
According to the rumor, a simplified but still improved version of the hinge, “with some technical adjustments,” will also make its way into the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Flip 8, and possibly even the Fold Wide later this year.
As for the original Galaxy Z TriFold, despite its very limited availability, we did get to spend some time with it long-term, and as we noted in our review, the hinge already feels solid and reassuringly durable.
Still, it never really had a wide release. The Galaxy Z TriFold 2 might change that, and if it goes global, pairing a broader release with an even more refined hinge is exactly the kind of step forward we expect from Samsung.
