It is widely reported that Apple could launch a foldable iPhone sometime in 2026, making it seven years late compared to Samsung, which entered the foldable display phone segment in 2019. Based on the information in a new report, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 could have at least two advantages over the first foldable iPhone.
Chinese tipster Digital Chat Station (DCS) revealed some information about the foldable iPhone. It will reportedly have a 5.25-inch cover display, a 7.58-inch foldable (inner) display, and a dual-camera setup on the rear. The device will reportedly have a punch-hole-shaped cover display cutout for one of its front-facing cameras and an under-display camera beneath its inner display.
If this information is correct, the foldable iPhone will have smaller displays than the Galaxy Z Fold 8. Since the Galaxy Z Fold 7 has a 6.5-inch cover display and an 8-inch foldable display, its successor will likely have at least similar-sized screens. However, their display aspect ratios could be different.
The Galaxy Z Fold 7 has a triple-camera setup on the rear, featuring a 200MP primary camera with OIS, a 12MP ultrawide camera with autofocus, and a 10MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom. The foldable iPhone is rumored to have a 48MP primary rear camera with OIS and an ultrawide rear camera (likely 12MP). It will likely not to have a dedicated telephoto camera.
Under-display cameras are known to have worse image quality compared to conventional cameras placed in punch-hole-shaped display cutouts. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 uses two 10MP front-facing cameras, one each in its two displays. So, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 could have at least similar front cameras, making it theoretically better than the foldable iPhone.
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 and the foldable iPhone are expected to launch in the second half of 2026. And Samsung's upcoming phone could have bigger displays and better cameras. However, only time will tell if better hardware will actually lead to better quality.
