Samsung is going to launch its next flagship smartphone with a book-style foldable display, the Galaxy Z Fold 7, on 9 July 2025, and the number of competitors it will have at launch is just increasing day by day. Apart from Honor’s upcoming Magic V5, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 will also have to compete with the Vivo X Fold 5.
Vivo has launched its new flagship smartphone with a book-style foldable display, the X Fold 5. Its features look fantastic on paper, and it may give the Galaxy Z Fold 7 a tough competition. Let’s take a look at what it offers and gauge how tough the competition will be for Samsung’s upcoming book-style foldable phone.
The Vivo X Fold 5 features an 8.03-inch foldable LTPO AMOLED display with 2,480 x 2,200 pixels resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate, and a staggering 4,500 nits peak brightness, on the inside. The cover display is a 6.53-inch unit with 2,748 x 1,172 pixels resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate, a jaw-dropping 5,500 nits peak brightness, and Armor 2 protection. The phone uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor and is available with up to 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage. It ships with Android 15-based OriginOS 5.
At the rear, the Vivo X Fold 5 has three cameras: a 50MP camera with a wide lens, PDAF, and OIS, a 50MP camera with a periscope telephoto lens featuring 3x optical zoom, PDAF, and OIS, and a 50MP camera with an ultra-wide lens and PDAF. For selfies, it has a 20MP camera on the cover display and a 20MP camera on the foldable display. The Vivo X Fold 5 has a massive, 6,000mAh battery, despite being just 9.2mm thin, with 80W wired and 40W wireless charging. It’s also the first foldable with an IP59 rating for dust and water resistance.
Comparing the Vivo X Fold 5 to the leaked specifications of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7, the former seems to have an inferior processor and lower resolution rear primary camera than the latter (Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 vs. Snapdragon 8 Elite and 50MP vs. 200MP). However, the one from Vivo seems to be better than the Galaxy Z Fold 7 at the rest of the things, featuring a display with higher brightness, larger RAM capacity, faster storage, higher resolution ultra-wide and telephoto cameras, larger battery, and better dust and water resistance.
Vivo has priced the X Fold 5 at CNY 6,999 (around USD 976) for the 12GB + 256GB variant, CNY 7,999 for the 12GB + 512GB variant, CNY 8,499 for the 16GB + 512GB variant, and CNY 9,499 for the 16GB + 1TB variant. On the other hand, Samsung sells the base variant of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 in China at CNY 12,599. The South Korean tech giant may offer the Galaxy Z Fold 7 for the same or higher price. Considering that, the Vivo X Fold 5 will be way more affordable than the Galaxy Z Fold 7 despite featuring equally impressive hardware.
