Samsung's new foldable phones seem to have caught the eyes of consumers in South Korea. The company announced that the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and the Galaxy Z Fold 5 have received over a million pre-orders in its home country. These are record-breaking numbers for the Galaxy Z series during the one-week pre-order period.

Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 5 are the most popular foldable phones from Samsung

The South Korean firm received 1.02 million pre-orders for the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and the Galaxy Z Fold 5, which is higher than last year's 0.97 million pre-order figure for the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and the Galaxy Z Fold 4. Naturally, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 was the more popular of the two, receiving 70% of all pre-orders, while the Galaxy Z Fold 5 accounted for 30%. In comparison, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 received 60% of all pre-orders last year. These comparative figures show that people were more interested in the Galaxy Z Flip 5 due to its bigger cover screen.

During a press conference a few days ago, Samsung MX chief TM Roh said the company wants its foldable phones to account for 20% of all sales in its premium smartphone segment.

People in South Korea don't seem very excited about the Galaxy Z Fold 5, probably because it hasn't brought many significant improvements. Both new foldable phones feature a new Flex Hinge mechanism that folds in a waterdrop shape, leaving no gap between the two halves of the phones. This results in a smoother opening and closing experience and more resistance to dust and debris. It also makes the phones thinner and aesthetically pleasing.

Samsung is facing the heat from competition in the foldable phone segment

Samsung is facing more competition this year in the foldable smartphone segment. Google launched its first foldable phone, the Pixel Fold, a few weeks ago. OnePlus is also planning to launch its first foldable phone later this month. Motorola has launched two new foldable phones to compete with the Galaxy Z Flip 5. Honor, OPPO, Vivo, and Xiaomi have launched at least a couple of foldable phones, and their phones have a less noticeable crease on the foldable screen, bigger batteries, and faster charging.
