Popular YouTuber JerryRigEverything tested the durability of the sapphire crystal glass on the Apple Watch Ultra to compare it with other smartwatches, including the Galaxy Watch 5 and the Garmin Fenix 7. And guess what? There were some interesting conclusions after the test.

For starters, the Apple Watch Ultra comes with sapphire crystal glass that is pretty difficult to scratch and is perfect for the rugged activities towards which it is targeted. According to Zack from ZerryRigEverything, the sapphire crystal glass has a hardness level close to that of a diamond. He makes use of the Mohs scale to show the hardness of the minerals from 1 to 10.

As per his previous testing on smartphones and other electronic devices, the glass scratches at level 6, and sapphire scratches at level 8 or 9, depending on its purity. The sapphire crystal glass on the Apple Watch Ultra had minor scratches at levels 6 and 7, and real damage started at level 8. This result is similar to what Zack observed with the Galaxy Watch 5.

Interestingly, the scratches at levels 6 and 7 were more prominent on the Galaxy Watch 5 compared to the Apple Watch Ultra. The YouTuber explains that this is because of the impurities in the material or polishing. Speaking of the Garmin Fenix 7, it had the purest form of sapphire crystal glass of the three watches, as it barely got scratched at levels 6 and 7.

So, are Apple and Samsung, lying about the usage of sapphire crystal glass on their smartwatches as the sapphire glass on the Garmin Fenix 7 is showing a different result? No, they are not.

It just depends on the purity of the sapphire crystal used in these watches. Otherwise, all watches, i.e., the Apple Watch Ultra, the Galaxy Watch 5, and the Garmin Fenix 7 do come with sapphire crystal glass. The YouTuber deduced that the Apple Watch Ultra was more prone to scratches as compared to the Galaxy Watch 5 and Garmin Fenix 7.
