TL;DR

  • Leaks suggest the Galaxy S27 Ultra will keep a new camera housing but also get a slightly rounder frame with softer edges.
  • That small frame tweak could make the phone feel more comfortable in hand and improve grip, especially without a case.
  • Samsung is expected to unveil the S27 series in early 2027, but the design and lineup are not official yet.

If the recent leaks prove accurate next year, the upcoming Galaxy S27 Ultra will redefine Samsung's design language with a new camera housing. That's the most significant rumored design change, but there are a few other ones that aren't as impactful to the visual sense.

A more comfortable design

Leaker Ice Universe recently shared a sketch showing the lower edges of the current Galaxy S26 Ultra and the upcoming Galaxy S27 Ultra side by side. The sketch draws attention to one tiny detail: The Galaxy S27 Ultra's frame has a slightly rounder, softer edge.

If the leak is accurate, this might be the least obvious design change in Samsung's upcoming Ultra flagship. Still, it could make the phone feel better in the hand and offer a more comfortable grip for users who prefer their phones caseless.

Such minimal changes can make a difference to how the phone feels, even though they may not be visually awe-inspiring.

Historically, smartphone makers have relied heavily on the shape of the frame to give devices a different feel or even make them feel thinner than they are. Samsung should be well aware of this, especially given its history with slim frames during the curved Edge display era.

Overall, some people seem to like this rumored design featuring a wide camera housing, while others aren't convinced. But early unofficial renders rarely represent the product perfectly, and in most cases, the final, market-ready version ends up more polished. So we wouldn't judge the Galaxy S27 Ultra's design too harshly just yet.

Samsung should announce the Galaxy S27 Ultra in early 2027. The phone should be joined by three other S27 models: base, Plus, and Pro models. That's what the leaks suggest, at the very least.

However, nothing is official until it is, and it's not like Samsung hasn't changed its strategy before. Time will tell exactly how the 2027 lineup will be shaped.
