Galaxy Book 3 competitor created by LG has OLED from Samsung

Samsung isn't the only Korean manufacturer to have developed new ultrabooks for 2023. Its once closest smartphone rival, LG, unveiled a new series of laptops at CES 2023 under the “LG Gram” moniker, which includes the LG Gram Ultraslim and LG Gram Style. And according to a new report, the series is powered by Samsung Display's OLED technology.

The word “OLED” is all over LG's marketing material for the LG Gram family of laptops. The official landing page for the Gram at CES 2023 says: “LG Gram Style, Standout sensual design with OLED display.” The company revealed that the OLED panel covers DCI-P3 100%, which means it offers perfect color reproduction, as well as a 100,000:1 contrast ratio and 400 nits (typical) of brightness.

Samsung Display powering the Galaxy Book 3 competitor

The LG Gram series of ultrabooks will be available in two sizes, clocking in at 14 and 16 inches, similar to the Galaxy Book 3 lineup. And a fresh report now says that Samsung Display will be the sole OLED supplier for the LG Gram laptops.

Although LG Display can manufacture flexible OLED panels, it doesn't have the ability to mass produce rigid OLED screens without some restructuring of its production line. However, the company does supply flexible OLED solutions to Apple for the iPhone and Watch lineups.

Interestingly, because of its need for rigid OLED, this marks the first time LG Display acquired OLED panels from its domestic competitor, Samsung Display. The latter company is essentially enabling a potential rival for Samsung Electronics' new Galaxy Book 3.

In case you missed the leaked Book 3 specifications, Samsung's upcoming ultrabooks should also use 120Hz AMOLED panels manufactured by Samsung Display. The laptops will be unveiled on February 1 at Unpacked alongside the new Galaxy S23 flagship phone lineup, and prospective buyers can reserve the ultrabook and earn $50 in Samsung Credit (or both the notebook and an S23 and earn $100 worth of credit).
