Today, Samsung unveiled the Galaxy A53 5G alongside the Galaxy A33 5G and the Galaxy A73 5G. The Galaxy A53 5G is the successor to last year's popular Galaxy A52, and it brings some improvements over its predecessor.
But are those improvements enough for Galaxy A52 users to consider it a worthy upgrade?
Galaxy A53 has a slightly smoother display
Both smartphones feature a 6.5-inch Super AMOLED Infinity-O display with Full HD+ resolution, HDR10+, and an in-display fingerprint reader. However, the Galaxy A53 features a 120Hz refresh rate compared to the Galaxy A52's 90Hz refresh rate. Both devices feature the same design with an IP67 rating for dust and water resistance.
Galaxy A52 and the Galaxy A53 also feature stereo speakers, but the latter is missing a dedicated 3.5mm headphone jack.
Exynos 1280 offers Galaxy A53 faster performance
The Galaxy A53 uses the 5nm Exynos 1280 chipset, which is faster than the Galaxy A52's 8nm Snapdragon 720G chipset. This results in improved day-to-day and gaming performance. Since the Galaxy A53 features a 5G chipset, it offers 5G connectivity. The rest of the connectivity features remain the same.
No improvements in the camera department
Both devices feature the exact same rear-facing camera setup: 64MP OIS + 12MP ultrawide + 5MP depth + 5MP macro. They also use the same 32MP front-facing cameras. So, we don't expect to see any major difference in image quality.
Galaxy A53 offers longer software support
The Galaxy A52 was launched with Android 11-based One UI 3.1 out of the box and was promised to get three major OS updates (up to Android 14). The Galaxy A53 comes with Android 12-based One UI 4.1 out of the box and will get four major OS updates (up to Android 16), which is brilliant, especially for those who plan to use the phone for the next few years.
Galaxy A53 has a longer battery life
The Galaxy A53 features a bigger battery (5,000mAh compared to Galaxy A52's 4,500mAh), so there might be a healthy improvement in battery life. Both phones feature 25W fast charging, promising full charge in close to an hour.
Should you upgrade?
Overall, the Galaxy A53 offers a slightly smoother display, faster performance, longer software support, 5G, and longer battery life. If these are the features you're looking for, the Galaxy A53 is a decent upgrade over the Galaxy A52. But, if you were hoping to see camera improvements, you would be disappointed.
If you're coming from a Galaxy A51, the Galaxy A53 5G will be a huge upgrade over your current phone.
