According to the numbers published by the analytics firm Strategy Analytics, Samsung sold 700,000 smartphone units in Japan during the second quarter of this year, acquiring 8.8 percent of the smartphone market in the country. This is a sharp rise from its 3.8 percent market share during Q2 2016. Apple is currently the biggest smartphone brand in Japan with 41.3 percent market share, selling 3.3 million iPhones. Sony stands at the second position with 16.3 percent (1.3 million units) market share.
Samsung had a market share of 10 percent in Japan during mid-2013, but it gradually decreased due to increased competition from Apple. Industry experts attribute the increase in Samsung’s smartphone market share in the country to the robust sales of the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8+. The company is planning to launch a new flagship smartphone, the Galaxy Note 8, later this month with a dual-camera system and increased memory.
