Samsung's chipmaking business might soon enjoy increased attention from companies like Qualcomm and NVIDIA. The company's semiconductor division was able to work out the 14nm FinFET production process while many of its competitors were wrapping up their deployment of 16nm systems. This gives the business an edge that rivals don't have and companies could soon look towards Samsung to provide them with chips manufactured using the 14nm process since that's going to be more economical than their existing systems. Samsung already provides chips to Apple, it has been doing so for quite some time, and soon it might do the same for Qualcomm and NVIDIA.
Industry insiders claim that the aforementioned companies want to make up for the decline in application processor prices and one way they can do that is to go for the latest systems which guarantee lower production cost. Furthermore 14nm processors will offer improved power economy.
If these claims turn out to be true then Samsung could very well be supplying chips to the likes of NVIDIA and Qualcomm from the second half of this year, which is why analysts now predict “stellar performance” from Samsung's semiconductor division.
How will Samsung's 14nm chips perform in the real world? We'll find out soon enough. Galaxy S6 is reportedly coming with Samsung's own Exynos 7420 64-bit octa-core processor which it has adopted instead of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810.
