WhatsApp has been adding new features to its platform to catch up with other messaging services that are miles ahead. WhatsApp group chats have been one of the areas of focus, which is continuously getting bigger. For a long time, there was a cap of 256 people to join a WhatsApp group. While this was good enough for a group of family and friends, it became limited for people working in an organization or for a larger group.

WhatsApp's group chat limit is now expanded to 1,024 people

Then it was raised to 512 people recently. But the recent report by WABetaInfo highlights that this number will get doubled, and the number of people you can add to a group will cross the thousand mark in the coming days. Yes, WhatsApp is rolling out an update that allows creating of groups with up to 1,024 people.

Sadly, the feature is limited to beta users, and it is rolling out only to them at the moment. In fact, not all beta members have received this feature. Only a select set of WhatsApp users are reportedly getting to use the expanded WhatsApp group chat facility. This feature is rolling out to both Android and iOS users.

Telegram allows up to 200,000 people in a group chat

If you are seeing this feature for yourself in WhatsApp, you will see the increased number cap when you create a group chat. A group chats with over a thousand people functions the same as it did back with a 256-person cap. Notably, you will see more messages, and your messages will reach more people, but that's about it.

While the ability to add over a thousand people to a group chat on WhatsApp may seem silly, its competitor, Telegram, allows you to add up to 200,000 people to the same group. This would be useful for enterprises or if you are using a group for broadcasting purposes. In that case, it will allow you to send a message or information to many people in one go.
