TL;DR

  • Samsung used reports of cracked iPhone Duo inner displays to mock Apple across its social accounts in several countries.
  • The jokes highlighted Galaxy Z Fold 8 durability and Samsung’s long experience with foldables, often using fake broken-screen visuals.
  • Apple says only a small number of devices are affected and is replacing them, while Samsung leaned into memes and ads.

Samsung has never needed much encouragement to poke fun at Apple. With some iPhone Duo owners reporting cracked inner displays, Samsung's social media teams have had plenty of inspiration.

In several countries, Samsung has been turning those reports into jokes starring the Galaxy Z Fold 8. Some involve a fake broken screen, while others simply remind Apple that Samsung has been making foldables for quite a while.

Apple says the display issue affects a small number of devices and is offering replacements to affected customers. Samsung, meanwhile, has been busy making memes. Here are some of our favorites.

Samsung Saudi Arabia has a very easy fix for a broken screen

One of the best comes from Samsung Saudi Arabia. Someone unfolds a Galaxy Z Fold 8, revealing what looks like a damaged inner display, complete with the lines seen in photos of broken iPhone Duo screens.

Then they exit the picture and return to a perfectly healthy home screen, revealing the damage was just an image and Samsung managed to give its Fold 8 the iPhone Duo look without actually breaking anything.

Samsung Malaysia feels left out of the drama

Samsung Malaysia takes a similar approach, repeatedly opening and closing a Fold 8 before showing an apparently damaged display. Once again, the supposed damage turns out to be a picture.

The caption jokes about feeling left out of all the durability discussions because Samsung has been “busy folding and getting on with our day.”

Who knew having a folding screen that keeps working can give you FOMO?

Canada ‘knows a thing or eight'

Samsung Canada turns the broken screen pattern into an ad campaign. Its images put bright lines and a dark vertical stripe across otherwise ordinary photos, recreating the look of a faulty foldable display.

The accompanying lines include “Folding is nothing new to us” and “Folding. We know a thing or eight.” You can probably guess which phone Samsung suggests buying instead.

The joke even made it onto mobile billboards in Toronto and Vancouver. Taking a dig at Apple on Instagram was just the beginning.

Australia enjoys the sound of a working screen

Samsung Australia's video carries a simple message: “how life sounds when your screen doesn't break when opening your phone.”

The message is paired with a Fold 8 being opened, along with the caption “sounds like durability.” Opening your phone is a fairly ordinary thing to do, and Samsung has found a way to make even that sound like a competitive advantage.

The UK is sleeping just fine

Samsung UK's contribution shows someone sleeping next to a Galaxy Z Fold 8, with the text: “How I sleep knowing my foldable phone is in its 8th generation.”

The caption adds a friendly “Night night x.” Not something Samsung could have done back in 2017 with the Galaxy Note 7, but it has certainly earned the right to do it now.

That might be the most politely delivered jab of the lot. Apple has had enough screen-related headaches without Samsung piling on as well.
