TL;DR

  • Samsung posted a nine-fold jump in third-quarter operating profit thanks to high memory chip prices.
  • Despite the strong results, top executives warned employees not to become complacent and to keep working on competitiveness.
  • Leaders said Samsung must strengthen product competitiveness, build new growth engines, and expand its AI capabilities.

Record profits have rolled in for Samsung these past quarters as the company takes full advantage of the record-high prices for memory chips. It posted its third quarter results this week, with a nine-fold increase in operating profit.

Top bosses at Samsung Electronics warn employees against being complacent just because the company is currently making more money in a single quarter than it has made in entire years.

Complacency here would leave Samsung worse off in the future

Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Jun Young-hyun of the chip division and President TM Roh of the DX division have called on employees to continue to work hard and restore the company's “absolute edge” in technology and to further strengthen Samsung's AI capabilities.

Ahead of the company's founding anniversary on November 1, the two executives shared their advice in an anniversary address to employees.

Jun said that instead of celebrating the results currently achieved due to favorable market conditions, it's now time to “take a sober look at our reality and our competitiveness and prepare for the future.” He added that it's still difficult to say that Samsung's technology competitiveness has fully recovered, and that “we still have a long way to go.”

“In an era of transformation, only companies that prepare and respond a step ahead can grow,” Roh said in his address. He set out three priorities for employees to focus on, which include strengthening product competitiveness, developing new growth engines, and AI transformation.

Roh highlighted intelligent eyewear, AI companion devices, home entertainment AI TVs and home companion appliances as some of the future growth engines that the company should focus on.
