Exynos could make a comeback to Samsung's Ultra phones after a five-year gap

After the lackluster performance of the Exynos 2200 chip in the Galaxy S22 Ultra, Samsung stopped using Exynos processors in its flagship phones. Every Galaxy S Ultra phone released from 2023 to 2026 exclusively featured Snapdragon chips. However, after a five-year hiatus, Samsung could bring Exynos back to Ultra phones.

As opposed to earlier reports, a new report originating from South Korea claims that Samsung plans to equip the Galaxy S27 Ultra with the Exynos 2700 chip in select countries, including South Korea. If this information turns out to be accurate, it would mark a major comeback for Exynos in Samsung's Galaxy S Ultra lineup.

The company has reportedly placed an initial order for motherboards intended for the Exynos 2700-powered Galaxy S27 Ultra variant. Samsung MX (the mobile division) and System LSI (which designs Exynos chips) are currently coordinating to begin actual development, even though the development process for the Snapdragon variant is already near completion.

The Exynos 2700 is already expected to power the base Galaxy S27 and Galaxy S27+ across most international markets, with select regions like the US receiving Snapdragon models instead.

Samsung's consideration to bring Exynos back to the Galaxy S27 Ultra in select markets points to growing internal confidence in the performance and power efficiency of the Exynos 2700 based on recent internal testing.

The Exynos 2700 is reportedly fabricated on Samsung Foundry's second-generation 2nm-class process node (SF2P). It reportedly uses a side-by-side (SbS) packaging technology to improve heat dissipation and efficiency. It is said to feature a 10-core CPU and the Xclipse 970 GPU. It could be compatible with LPDDR6 DRAM and UFS 5.0 storage.
