Now Bar debuted on Galaxy phones with One UI 7.0 to display ongoing activities like media playback. With One UI 8.0, Samsung integrated Now Bar with Android 16's Live Updates feature to support more third-party apps like Uber. One UI 9.0 will support even more app categories in the Now Bar, thanks to expanded Live Updates support in Android 17.

At the Google I/O 2026 developer conference, Google revealed that Live Updates in Android 17 will support a new “Metric Style” notification template, which can show three data points simultaneously. This format is ideal for apps that need to continuously display multiple metrics in real time, such as workout tracking. Google noted that this new template is particularly suited for three types of apps: health and fitness, timers, and travel.

A workout tracking app can use Live Update's Metric Style to display current calories burned, heart rate, and pace. An airline or flight tracking app can display a flight's takeoff time, current location, and landing time all at once.

Apps using this new style can display information in four places: notifications center, status bar chip, lock screen, and the always-on display mode. Because Samsung integrates Android's Live Updates into Now Bar, any app that supports this new layout will automatically show up in the Now Bar in One UI 9.0.
