Apple requests a 3,500ppi OLED display from Samsung for its AR headset

Recent reports suggest that Apple has bumped up the specifications of the OLED on Silicon (OLEDoS) panels for maximum immersion for its AR headset. Apple has requested its suppliers, Samsung Display and LG, to manufacture upgraded displays for its AR headsets. But this upgraded display won't be used in the first-generation Apple AR headset, which is speculated to debut early next year.

Cupertino calls the AR headset display OLEDoS (OLED on Silicon), and it will be manufactured by both Samsung Display and LG Display. Notably, both these suppliers supply displays for the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max as well. So, there shouldn't be any doubts regarding the quality of the display panel. As far as OLEDoS is concerned, it is a new display technology that incorporates silicon instead of glass and is meant specifically for AR products.

The first-gen Apple AR headsets will feature displays made by Sony

According to TheElec, Apple won't be using Samsung's or LG's displays for its AR product that is expected to launch next year. Instead, it will be using Sony's display for its first-generation AR headset. Apple originally wanted a 2,800ppi display, which has now been upgraded to 3,500ppi. The report also echoes that while Apple's first AR headset will come with OLEDoS at 3,500ppi, Samsung and LG are working on 6,000-7,000ppi with their future LEDoS displays.

Both Samsung and LG are expected to enter mass production of the OLEDoS displays by 2024. LG was the first to jump the ship in manufacturing such a new display technology, and Samsung was a bit slower to dip its toes. However, Samsung's top management advised not to judge the technology so quickly. The sources also quote, “Samsung considers OLEDoS to have a lower entry barrier than LEDoS and wants to lead on the latter technology over its rivals LG Display and Sony.
