The Google Discover feed, which appears on the leftmost home screen of Galaxy phones and tablets, is already hated by many. It shows the latest news articles, sports scores, and videos that users might be interested in. In the future, it could bring even more useless content to your Galaxy devices.
According to a 9To5Google report, Google has started displaying popular social media accounts and posts in the Google Discover feed on smartphones. This is a major shift from news articles and videos that we've seen since the feature's arrival in 2018. Google might be trying to display more real-time content, similar to Threads and X.
These social media posts include shortform videos posted on Instagram, X, and YouTube Shorts. It isn't clear if shortform videos from Bluesky, Mastodon, Threads, and TikTok will also be showcased in the feed. This change has only appeared for some Android smartphone users. So, it isn't clear if this is just a A/B test from Google or if it is a fundamental change for Google Discover.
Apparently, one of the shortform videos displayed in the Google Discover feed is related to a sports match the user is interested in. Whe you click on social media posts, they are opened in their respective apps. So, the company might have started pushing users to platforms other than its own. Is this change related to Google trying to reduce its monopoly in online search and ad space?
Will this change also come to Galaxy smartphones and tablets in the future? Only time will clear things up.
