While it is true that Samsung Display showcased numerous tri-fold and rollable design prototypes over the years, those devices were just demos for the tech conglomerate's Display division to show off what it could do and attract clients.
In contrast, Samsung's mobile experience (MX) division kept its tentative tri-fold plans under wraps. However, during the launch of the Galaxy S25 series at Unpacked in January 2025, Samsung MX teased an unmarked roadmap that included a dual-hinge tri-fold phone next to the upcoming XR headset.
This may suggest that Samsung intends to release its first tri-fold phone this year. An exact launch date has not been confirmed. However, Korean media outlet ETNews recently shared more details about Samsung's alleged production and release plans.
According to multiple anonymous industry sources cited by ETNews, Samsung intends to manufacture the tri-fold phone alongside the rest of the core Galaxy Z series. They are all developed and planned for production simultaneously.
Samsung will reportedly start mass-producing the necessary components in April. Then, Samsung will supposedly release the Galaxy Z series and its new tri-fold/dual-hinge phone in July at the next Unpacked event.
Previous reports said Samsung intends to manufacture 200,000 dual-hinged folding phones this year.
As for the design of the dual-hinge foldable phone, Samsung MX reportedly chose to take inspiration from Samsung Display's Flex G prototype, which has been among the several demo units showcased over the years at trade shows.
The Flex G folds inwards twice rather than folding in a Z shape. Therefore, it should have an inner foldable screen for a tablet-like experience and a second, rigid external cover screen for a compact usage mode.
